“I used to drive past them and promise… one day I’d save them.”
The Story Of How Alberts Horse Sanctuary Began.
I used to drive past them and promise… one day I’d save them 💚
When I was younger, there were horses in a field not far from where I lived. Every time we passed them, I would say, “One day… I’ll rescue horses like these and give them a better life.” But when you’re young, you don’t realise how quickly things change…how horses get moved on, sold… or simply disappear. All you have is a dream —and the belief that anything is possible. 🩷
Then at just 15, after leaving school, that dream became real.
In 2005, me, my parents and sister opened Albert’s Horse Sanctuary 💚And not long after… everything changed. The calls started coming in. Then the horses started arriving at our gates.
The very first horse we ever took in was Fergus. A little 13hh Highland pony, who arrived on the 15th of August 2005. He had problems being very overweight. He lived with melanomas. He battled COPD.
To us, he was everything ❤️ He stayed with us for the rest of his life, passing away at the incredible age of 31 💛 He was the beginning of it all. But the name of the sanctuary… came from another very special horse.
At the time, we had three horses of our own —and one of them was Albert. Albert was strong, gentle and unforgettable. The kind of horse who leaves a mark on your heart forever. And when it came time to name the sanctuary, there was only ever going to be one name; Albert 💚
From that moment on… we never looked back. Because sometimes, saying no didn’t feel like an option. We were told, “If you can’t take them… they’ll be put to sleep.” So we said yes. Again… and again… and again. Not because it was easy —but because they needed someone to choose them.
Today, we care for over 50 animals:
🐴 Horses 🐑 Sheep 🐐 Goats 🐱 Cats 🐔 Hens & ducks 🪿Donkeys 🫏
Each one with their own story. Each one here because someone finally said yes. It’s not easy. It’s hard work every single day. But without this sanctuary…so many of these animals wouldn’t be here today. And seeing them safe, happy, and loved — that’s what keeps us going 💛
If this story means something to you, please share our Sanctuary name 💚 Because every share helps us continue what Fergus started…and honour the name Albert carries every single day.
